Item POTENSI DAN PENGEMBANGAN IKAN SELAIS (Kryptopterus DAN Ompok: Siluridae) DI PROVINSI RIAU(2014-05-21) Elvyra, RozaStudy on Kryptopterus and Ompok (Siluridae) in Indonesia, and in Sumatra particularly, is scarce. Less study on the fish because Kryptopterus and Ompok were not found in all rivers in Indonesia. They were found limited to a few ecosystem of the floodplain river in Kalimantan, Jambi, Palembang and Riau. Riau Province has a potential of the ecosystem of floodplain river with its high diversity of fish species. Floodplain river is a unique and complex ecosystem, it includes watersheds, oxbow lake, marshes and rivers which has the unity function for the survival of many species fish. Among the fish that live in the ecosystem of foodplain river in Riau Province are Kryptopterus and Ompok belonging to the familiy Siluridae. They are generally known as lais fish, or in Riau Province is known as selais fish. Five species of selais fish were found in Riau Province, namely K. apogon, K. limpok, K. schilbeides, O. eugeneiatus and O. hypophthalmus. Study on genetic diversity and biological reproduction of selais fish in Riau Province has been done. Potential genetic resources and biological reproduction of fish asssociated with its habitat will be discussed and can be used as the basis for the next development of biological resources in the floodplain river of Riau ProvinceItem INFLUENCE OF YOLK ADDITION ON PROTEIN FOAMINGCONSOLIDATION POROUS ALUMINA CONTAINING HYDROXYAPATITE NANOPOWDER(2014-05-21) Fadli, Ahmad; Komalasari; Alfarisi, Cory DianPresent paper reports the influence of yolk addition on physical properties of porous aluminahydroxyapatite composites prepared using protein foaming-consolidation method. Alumina and hydroxyapatite (HA) powders were mixed with yolk at an adjusted mass ratio to make slurries. The slurries were cast into molds and the dried for foaming- consolidation process. The dried bodies were burned at 600ºC for 1 hour, followed by sintering at temperature of 1550ºC for 2 hours. The addition of yolk into the slurry shifted the rheological properties from shear thinning behavior to a Newtonian fluid and resulted in bigger foaming capacity. The porous alumina-HA composites with shrinkages in the range of 43.3 vol.% – 58.4 vol.% were obtained. The shrinkage of bodies increased with increasing concentration of yolk. The compressive strength was 7.5 MPa at 44.6% porosity 2.6 MPa at 57% porosityItem BUILDING AN OPTICAL TWEEZERS FOR LIFE SCIENCE RESEARCHES(2014-05-21) MinarniOptical Tweezers has evolved as a valuable tool to trap and manipulate particles. Since it was introduced in 1986 by Ashkin and colleagues, Optical Tweezers has been used in many research areas. Its applications are found on research in atomic physics, medical physics, chemistry, and more notably in biophysics and cell biology. The simplest optical tweezers can be built from a commercial optical microscope either upright or inverted. The tweezing force comes from the radiation pressure of laser light which is sent to the back of the objective lens then is focused by the lens to the particles in a cuvette or slides. The particles can be any things from atoms, molecules, bacteria, viruses, blood cells to DNA. The optical tweezers are very useful in studying biological samples because it can provide picoNewton and nanometer ranges of force hence one can study the motor properties of the particles without damaging them. There are many parameters can describe a reliable optical tweezers. These parameters depend on the laser wavelength used and the size of the particles. In this article, the process to build an optical tweezers and what optical components needed will be described. The optical tweezers described has been used to trap two size-polystyrene beads with 830 nm laser light from a diode laser. This optical tweezers will be prepared to trap and study chlorophylls of mango leaves in searching for the new method in identifying its diversity. In the future, a portable and affordable optical tweezers for life science researches will be builtItem SYNTHESIS AND STRUCTURAL STUDIES OF N-(HALOGENOCARBONOYL)-N'-(ARYL)THIOUREA(2014-05-21) Abosadiya, Hamza M; Hasbullah, Siti Aishah; Yamin, Bohari MThe number of structure of carbonoylarylthiourea derivatives is increasing because of their potential in biological properties. The structural informations are important for the structureactivity relationship studies or rational drug design work. The present study was designed to investigate caspase-3 activation in rat testis germ cell after testosterone undecanoate and depot medroxyprogesterone acetate administration and to analyze corelation between caspase-3 activation and rat sperm concentration. The Sprague-Dawley rats was administered with 2,5 mg testosterone undecanoate at 6 week intervals and 1,25 mg depot medroxyprogesterone acetate at 12 week intervals. They were randomly divided into five groups i.e K0 (pre-treatment), K1 (6 weeks suppression after induced), K2 (12 weeks suppression after induced), K3 (18 weeks suppression after induced) and K4 (24 weeks suppression after induced). Each treatment had a control. Activation of caspase-3 on testis was evaluated by Immunohistochemistry method. Epididimal sperm concentrations was also calculated. The result of analysis of variants showed that there were no statistical differences among five treatment (K0, K1, K2, K3 dan K4) (p>0,05). But there were statistical differences between K3 and its control as well as K4 and its control (p<0,05). From data analysis we found that there was correlation but not significant between caspase-3 germ cell which cause decreasing of rat sperm concentration. Testosterone undecanoate and depot medroxyprogesterone acetate administration can cause caspase-3 activation in rat testis germ cells. Increasing of caspase-3 activation can tendency decrease of rat sperm concentration in 12 weeks suppression after induced.Item PENGARUH PENAMBAHAN DIOKTIL FTALAT SEBAGAI ZAT PEMLASTIS TERHADAP KARAKTERISASI MEMBRAN POLISULFON(2014-05-21) Sophia, Halida; Radiman, Cynthia LPolysulfone is one of the polymers frequently used in membrane preparation. Plysulfone membranes prepared by phase method shows a low mechanical strength when used in high pressure or self-supporting membranes. In order to improve the mechanical strength of membranes, dioctyl phthalate (DOP) was used as plasticizer. In his research, the membrane composition used were 18 % polysulfone (PSf),64 % dimetylacetamide and varied concentration of polyethyleneglycol (PEG) and dioctyl phthalate. The characterization included mechanical properties, hidrofility and morphology membranes. The showed that the presence of DOP in the membrane affected the membrane mechanical properties ; the optimum strength was 6.16 GPa Hidrofility Polysulfone membranes decrease. The morphology analysis by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) showed the typical asymmetric structure where membranes skins had tiny pores and macro void structure in sub layer membraneItem PENGARUH KONSENTRASI DAN STUDI KINETIKA ADSORPSI ZAT WARNA CONGO RED PADA PHYROPHYLLITE(2014-05-21) Zulfikar, Muhammad AliThe kinetics of sorption of Congo red dye stuff onto phyrophyllite under the influence of initial concentration has been studied. The adsorption capacity of phyrophyllite was found to decrease with increase in dye initial concentration. The adsorption mechanism was found to follow pseudofirst- order model with rate constants in the range of 0.039 – 0.079 min-1. Both the intra-particle diffusion and Boyd kinetic models indicated that intra-particle diffusion was the main rate determining step in Congo red adsorption processItem HYDROGEL AS A MINI REACTOR FOR FERROCENIUM NANOPARTICLES(2014-05-21) Omar, Katijah; Mokhtarom, Maryam; Salleh, Noraini Mohd; Yuroni; Yamin, Bohari MA simple method to produce ferrocenium nanoparticles (FcNPs) based on pH induced using hydrogel systems as a mini reactor is described. Hydrogels were prepared using Acryl Amide (AM),N, N' methylenebisacrylamide(MBA) as cross-linking agent,Potassium Persulfate(KPS) as the initiator and alsoTetramethlethylenediamine(TEMED)as a gelling agent. In order to prepare the nanoparticles, two different approaches were used. First, the FcNPs were prepared in-situ and secondly the hydrogel was immersed into the Ferrocenium solution at different concentrations. These nanoparticles were characterized by Fourier Thermal Infrared (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The analytical results show the hydrogel systems are able to act as a mini reactor for FcNPs.Item DAN CAHAYA MATAHARI KE ATAS SIFAT FIZIKOKIMIA SERBUK RUMPAI LAUT Kappaphycus Alvarezii(2014-05-21) Sjamsiah; Ramli, Nazaruddin; Daik, Rusli; Yarmo, Mohd. AmbarThe purpose of this work is to study the effects of two drying treatments which are sun (SND) and spray-drying (SD) on physicochemical properties of seaweed kappahycus alvarezii powders such as viscosity, gel strength, gelling point, melting point, and proximate content (protein, fat, moisture, and ash) powder. By using spray dry method, seaweed powders have gel strength, gelling point, and melting point higher than those of sun dry method which may due to the effect of high temperature (160 °C), while by using sun dry method, it gave higher proximate content and viscosity than those of spray dry method. These results are useful for selecting suitable drying method depending on the physicochemical properties of the kappahycus alvarezii powder.Item SYNTHESIS OF CHALCONES CONTAINING NAPHTHALENE MOIETY FROMACETYLNAPHTHALENE AND CHLOROBENZALDEHYDE(2014-05-21) Ismail, Endom; Jasril; Violandani, Puput; Ramadena; Teruna, Hilwan Yuda; Nurbalatif; Zamri, AdelFour chalcones containing naphthalene moiety were synthesized from acetylnaphthalene and chlorobenzaldehyde by aldol condensation reaction under stirring with aqueous KOH solution as catalyst. The highest inulinase isolat was identified as Aspergillus sp1. This isolate produced 1,76 mg fructose/ml.Item SUBTERRANEAN TERMITE FAUNA ON A PEATLAND: A PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENT OF THE SPECIES DIVERSITY AND BIOMASS UNDER DIFFERENT LAND USE TYPES(2014-05-21) Muhammad, Ahmad; Ayu, Febri; Saputra, Andi; Yus, Yusnarti; Purnasari, Treshandila; Salbiah, DesitaOwing to their wet nature, peatlands in their original conditions may not be favorable habitats for most ground-dwelling organisms. Apart from being acidic, peat is water saturated most of the times, making it unlikely habitatble for such organisms. After the construction of drainage system, however, substantial amount of water can be drawn out from the peat, resulting the drop of water table. We hypothesized that the alteration of this fundamental feature of peatlands might promote the proliferation ground-dwelling organisms in peatland habitats and/or colonization by non-native ones. We tested our hypothesis by surveying termite species richness and biomass under different land use systems that reflected a gradient of water table alteration (from shallower than 20 cm to deeper than 100 cm below the surface). The study has been carried out under peat swamp forest, rubber jungle, rubber plantation, oil palm plantation, homegarden, and acacia plantation forest in Bukit Batu area, Riau, Sumatra. We encountered a total 18 spp of subterranean termites with the average of only 6.2 spp found under each land use type. The average subterranean termite biomass was 0.29 gr/m2. Our data did not support our hypothesis in a way that subterranean termites were even most diverse (9 spp) and demonstrated largest biomass (0.53 gr/m2) under peat swamp forest, where the water table was never deeper than 20 cm and the peat was almost always watersaturated. However, the striking differences in species composition between peat swamp forest assemblage and those under other land use types suggest that the conversion of peatland might have significantly reduced the number of species native to this ecosystem, while inviting nonnative onesItem AKTIVITAS SENYAWA BIOAKTIF ANTICENDAWAN DARI Ralstonia pickettii TT47 TERHADAP Rhizoctonia solani PENYEBAB PENYAKIT HAWAR PELEPAH PADI(2014-05-21) RustamR. pickettii TT47 (isolate TT47) were selected isolate having the potency of strong inhibition to the growth of R. solani in vitro and suppress the development of rice sheath blight disease in vivo. The antifungal activity test of the filtrate from fermentation broth of the isolate showed that the growth of R. solani reduced significantly. Presumably the culture broth of the isolate contains antifungal bioactive compounds. Antifungal activity in the culture broth of the isolate was significantly correlated with the cell growth of the isolate. Antifungal bioactive compounds were successfully extracted using buthanol or hexane solution for TT47 isolate.. MIC of TT47-hexana extract was 0,1 mg/l, and the extract was not phythotoxic against the rice seed. Stability of the active metabolites in filtrate broth cultured isolate was relatively stable on pH range from acidic to basic (pH 4, 7, and 10) but was sensitive to temperature.Item EFFECT OF PLANT GROWTH STAGE ON THE POPULATION OF WHITEFLY Bemisiatabaci UNDER GLASSHOUSE CONDITIONS(2014-05-21) Mansour; MohamadRoff; Hanifah, MohdThe infestation of the whitefly (WF), Bemisiatabaci (Genn.) (Homoptera: Aleyrodidade) has caused losses in greenhouse crops in tropical and subtropical regions. The pest sucks plant sap, thereby weakening plants and causing shoot and leaf distortion (Brown et al, 1995). More significantly whiteflies secrete large amount of honeydew onto leaves and fruit, which in turn gets colonized by sooty molds, thus deteriorating the quality of greenhouse vegetables such as chilli, eggplant, tomato and okra. The first documentation of whiteflies in Malaysia was in 1935, albeit not as an economic pest, on chilli (C. annuum), soybean (Glycine max) and okra (A. esculentus) in the lowlands of Malaya. It has since been seen in numerous locations in Peninsular Malaysia on angled loofah (Luffaacutangula), brinjal (S. melongena), cucumber (Cucumissativus), french bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) and longbean (Vignasesquipedalis) (Syed et al, 2000). With its recognition as a polyphagouspest there is aconsiderable rise in the research dedicated to the whitefly (Inbar&Gerling. 2008). A key factor that determines the selection of the host plant for whitefly feeding is plant age (Horowitz. 1986), a demonstration of which was the increase of B. tabaci populations in pumpkin, bean, zucchini and other plants as they aged (Simmons, 1999). This study aims to better understand the relation between plant growth stages and whitefly populationsItem SYNTHESIS PRECIPITATED CALCIUM CARBONATE (PCC) USING LISIN AS DIRECTING AGENT(2014-05-21) Yanti, Pepi Helza; Jamarun, Novesar; Arief, SyukriSynthesis Precipitated Calcium Carbonate have done using lisin as source of amino acid with modification of caustic soda method. This leads to a searchfor novel methods, which are more efficient and environmentally friently with desired properties to synthesize these materials. This paper reports the novel synthesis of layered manganese oxide with birnessite-type structure using ceramic method. The effect of synthetic parameters such as reductant types, mol rasio of precursor, reaction temperatura and reaction time were studied to optimize the product. As-synthesized products were characterized using X-ray diffraction to determine their structure, phases and crystallinity, while SEM wasusedto determine their morphology. Other characterization includes Gas Sorption Analyzer (GSA) forsurface area and FT-IR foracidity. There sultsindicated that both reductants (Glucose and fructose) led to the formation of birnessite with different purityde pending the condition of reaction. For glucose as reducing agent, the optimum conditions with desired properties were as follows; KMnO4 :glukosa (3 : 1), calcination temperatura of 700°C for 7 hours. The birnessite obtained has the following properties such as flat appereance, particleize of 0.3-2 μm, and surface area of 2,6515 m2/gram. On the other hand, fructose produced the optimum condition with mol rasio of KMnO4 :fruktosa (3 : 1), calcination temperature of 500°C and reaction time of 5 hours with the following properties of birnessite: particlesize of 2,5 – 5 μm, surface area of 2,5781 m2/gram, and acidicsites, Lewis site at 1460 cm-1 and Bronstedsite at 1640 cm-1.Item CHANGES IN PHENOLIC AND FLAVONOID CONTENT OF Coleus amboinicus TEA DURING STORAGE(2014-05-21) Jose, Christine; Nurhayati; ChainulfiffahColeus amboinicus plants were grown organically treated with three different foliar treatments (control, herb fermented plant extract and EM5). Green tea and black tea were produced from each treatment and stored for up to three months. All green teas have significant higher (P<0.05) phenolic and flavonoid contents compared to all black teas. Green tea produced from EM5 foliar treatment showed the highest phenolic and flavonoid content. Some changes of phenolic and flavonoid contents were observed in green teas and black teas during 3 months storage.
