Abstract:
Cryptomelane type manganase oxide is a tunnel manganese oxide with pore size of 2 x 2.
Cryptomelane can be used as an adsorbent and catalyst for the degradation of organic waste
compounds. Methylene blue (MB) is a synthetic dye that is difficult to degrade naturally,
therefore an effective method is needed to degrade the dye. Fenton-like method with Fenton
heterogeneous composite MnO2/MgO catalyst was used to degrade methylene blue dye. In
this study, MnO2/MgO composites were synthesized using a one-step sol-gel method by
reacting KMnO4, glucose and MgO. The synthesis results were characterized using X-Ray
Diffraction (XRD) which indicated the formation of cryptomelane type manganese oxide.
The synthesized MnO2/MgO composite was then applied for the degradation of methylene
blue using H2O2 as oxidant. The optimum degradation of methylene blue was obtained under
conditions of 60 ppm methylene blue concentration, 15 mL H2O2 volume and 25 mg
composite mass, which showed the most influential catalyst mass with a degradation
percentage of 70.84% in 120 minutes.
