Abstract
Mempelam or Mangifera laurina BI. known as semi-wild Sumatran mango which has a
wide therapeutic potential compared to other types of mango. However, this species tends
to be neglected and uncultivated. This study aimed to reveal the therapeutic potential in
terms of the toxicity of the Mempelam. The study was conducted using the BSLT method
with Artemia salina Leach. larvae as the test object. Concentration levels of methanol
extracted fromMempelam leaves were 1000 ppm, 100 ppm, 10 ppm and 0 ppm. The LC50
result of the methanol extract of Mempelam leaves was obtained at 3.20 ppm. The result
indicated that the methanol extracted from Mempelam leaves is highly toxic and has
potential as an anticancer. In addition, toxicity of Mempelam leaves is higher than that of
common cultivated mangoes. Thus, apparently it is promising to develop Mempelam as
an alternative anticancer with less side effects.
