Abstract

Nosocomial Infection or Health Care Associated Infection (HCAI) is one of the leading causes of death and morbidity in hospitals and the other health care facilities. Washing hands is the way to reduces incidence of HCAI. World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the use of alcohol-based handrub because it is more acceptable and tolerabel than the other handwashing products and WHO has identified formulations for the local preparation. This is a descriptive survey study aimed to determine the acceptability and tolerability of World Health Organization (WHO)-recommended handrub formulation used by the student from senior clerkship in Arifin Achmad Hospital, Riau Province. The subjects were 40 student from senior clerkship in surgery, gynecology and obstetrics, and internal medicine department of Arifin Achmad Hospital Pekanbaru. Each respondent was given WHO- recommended handrub formulation used for three days. On the first day, the observer distribute the bottles of the product being tested and evaluate the state of the participants’ hands (objective skin evaluation). After 3 days of consecutive use of the product, participants completed the questionnaire and the observer evaluate the state of participants’ hands (objective skin evaluation). The results of this study showed that WHO- recommended handrub formulation has a good acceptability for its application, colour, smell, irritation, ease of use, speed of drying, and overall evaluation but has a less rate of acceptability for its textures and drying effect. But, WHO- recommended handrub formulation has a good tolerability.
