Abstract
The problem observed is what the application of cooperative learning mode of
Numbered Head Together (NHT) type can increase student proficiency for reading
comprehension about short story in 5th grade of state primary school no. 012 of
Lubuk Garam, district of Siak Kecil. This research proposed for increasing the
reading comprehension proficiency of the students about short story in the 5th grade
of state primary school no. 012 of Lubuk Garam, district of Siak Kecil, by applying
the learning cooperative mode of NHT type. The Subjetct of this research is the
students in the 5th grade of state primary school of Lubuk Garam, district of Siak
Kecil, in education year of 2011/2012. From interview observation which obtained
from the student learning results whom get mark under minimum passing grade or
not passed on basic score is 10 of 17 students with average value 51.76 (less
category). In the first semester t examination, reading comprehension of the students
are averagely 63,52 (enough category). While after the second semester examination,
the student proficiency for reading comprehension about short story increased
averagely 70.58 (good category). Percentage of teacher activities for studying with
the treatment in first encounter of the first cycle is 62.5 %, 70.8 % for second
encounter in the first cycle, 83.33 % for first encounter in the second cycle, and in
second encounter of second cycle is 87.5 %. Percentage of student activities in first
encounter of the first cycle is 58.33 %, 70.83 % for first encounter in the first cycle,
83.33 % for first encounter in the second cycle and in second encounter of the second
cycle is 91.66 %. From the illustration above shows that learning cooperative mode
of Numbered Head Together (NHT) type can increase the student proficiency for
reading comprehension about short story in the 5th grade of state primary school no.
012 of Lubuk Garam, district of Siak Kecil.
