Abstract

The demand on the river’s materials to fulfill the construction activities at Riau Province had caused the exploitation on Kampar River’s materials. These activities that under controlled could cause bed materials movement since the bed form could found an equilibrium phase when its stability was disturbed. This movement affects the bed material’s characteristic will be changed. This research’s aim is to know about the characteristic of Kampar River’s bed materials at the time this research did. The samples of bed material are used to know the grain coefficient of gradation, such as grain size d16, d35, d50, d65, d84, mean (average) of geometric ( ) and standard deviation of geometric (G) are often used as a parameter to define the characteristic of bed material. This research shows that bed materials of Kampar River have a non-uniform distribution ( >1.0), (G>1.2). Its classification belongs to very fine sand up to very coarse gravel. The bulk density of these materials have an interval 2.2 – 2.6 for coarse material and 2.51 – 2.63 for fine material. The material’s porosity at segment of Rantau Berangin till Bangkinang has an interval 31.47 – 33.58 %. The bed materials of this segment have a shape factor at interval 0.22 – 0.75 and have a relationship with its fall velocity.
