dc.description.abstractThe quality of environment has been declining and the destruction of environment can be found in many places. Therefore, it is time for the society to embrace the awareness to protect the environment, which can be reflected in the environmental-friendly behaviour. Implementing the intervention that can increase the environmental-friendly behaviour is a challenge, however such intervention can be initiated from the community at school. One of the initative that can be done is to implement a contextual mathematics teaching that relates to environmental issues and aims to educate students about the importance of protecting the environment that are needed to build a sustainable society. A simple research was conducted to the seventh grade students of Santa Maria Junior High School Pekanbaru. This study applied descriptive qualitative techniques with contextual approach to learning, reflection, and commitment. The study starts by giving a set of questions to the students. The questions given to the students were related to environmental problems which were familiar to students. Then, the results of students‘ works were analysed to gain understanding. Finally, students were facilitated to reflect on their learning and how they were going to commit on protecting the environment. Data analysis were conducted by comparing the results of the groups‘ work and from interviews of the reflection and commitment of the students. The result shows that through the models that were given to them, students could solve the problems and understand the efforts for protection, preservation, and usage of the environment for sustainability of the environment. From the commitment of the students in general stated that the students were ready to commit to increase their environmental-friendly behaviour.en_US
