Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder that has become a serious problem in the world, especially type 2 diabetes mallitus. Prevention of type 2 diabetes mellitus could be done by inhibiting α-glucosidase enzyme in order to decrease the blood glucose. The objectives of this study were to determine in-vitro α-glucosidase inhibitory activities of aqueous extracts (infusa) from medicinal plants, tamarind leaves (Tamarindus Indica L), parasite flame herb (Scurrul sp) and putri malu herb (Mimosa pudica L) in fresh samples and dried samples. Inhibition of α-glucosidase enzymes was determined by p-NPG substrate, and the absorbance was measured by microplate reader. Acarbose was used as positive control. The results showed that all samples were potential inhibitors for α-glucosidase. Activites of 3 extracts were not significantly different from acarbose (97.99 + 0,19) i.e., infusa of tamarind dried leaves (99.10 + 0.36); infusa of parasite flame fress herb (97.96 + 0.85) and infusa of putri malu fresh herb (98.64 + 1.25).
