Abstract
The purpose of this classroom action research was to improve reading
comprehension of the second year students at SMAN 2 Tambang by using STAD
cooperative learning. The second year students of SMAN 2 Tambang were low on
reading comprehension and it should be increased. This research consisted of one
circle of treatment that began with planning, action, observation and reflection. The
cycle has four meetings using STAD technique, in which that STAD consisted of five
major components: class presentation, team study, quizzes, individual improving
scores, and team recognition. This research was conducted in October to November
2012, in the academic year 2012/2013. The subjects were 30 students from class XI
IPS. There were pre-test before doing the treatment and post-test after finishing the
treatment for measurement. There were also observation sheets for the students and
the teacher to see the whole process in the classroom whether the teacher and students
have better performance or not. As the result, STAD cooperative learning could
improve the students’ reading comprehension from 53.21% of the average pre-test
score or only 3 students passed the pre-test to 75.88% of the average post-test score
or 28 students passed in the post-test based on minimum passing grade (70). It proved
that the research was successful to improve the students’ reading comprehension by
using STAD cooperative learning.
