Abstract
The background of this research is the problem many students have not been able and skilled in
expressing creative ideas into essays description. This is evident from the many students who have
skillfully written descriptions by the number of students who are not skilled 28 students (77.8%)
and skilled students 8 students (22.2%). The problems of this research is the application of the
model Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) can improve the writing skills of essay graders
description IVB SD Negeri 74 Pekanbaru? Subjects were IVB grade students of SD Negeri 74
Pekanbaru school year 2012/2013 a total of 36 students. This study aims to improve the writing
skills of essay graders description IVB SD Negeri 74 Pekanbaru by applying the model Contextual
Teaching and Learning (CTL). Research data collection instruments in the Sheet teacher
observations, student observation sheets, and test daily tests. Essay writing skills descriptions of
the average value of 47.8 in the preliminary data. In the first cycle of 3 6 UH students average
value of 68.6 (category enough), and the second cycle an average of 81.6 (very good category).
Teacher activity at the first meeting of 56.25% (category enough), increased in the second meeting
of 68.75% (both categories), the third meeting of 87.5% (very good category) and the fourth
meeting of 93.75% (very good category) . The first meeting of the student activity 43.75% (less
category), the second meeting of 56.25% (enough categories), as well as third meeting 75% (both
categories) and the fourth meeting of 93.75 (very good category). Thus, the hypothesis that stated
if applicable models Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL), it can improve the writing skills of
essay graders description IVB SD Negeri 74 Pekanbaru, is acceptable.
