Abstract

This research aims to determine the genetic variabilities and heritabilities of agronomic characters of some varieties and strains of sorghum. Research has been conducted in the exprimental field of Faculty of Agriculture, University of Riau from July 2011 to January 2012. The research used a randomized block design which consisted of 15 treatments and 3 replications. Treatments are 4 varieties namely Durra, UPCA-S1, Mandau and Kawali and 11 strains, B-100, B-95, B-92, B-90, B-83, B-76, B-75, B-72, B-69, ZH-30 and CTY 33. Result of the experiments indicated that plant height, number of leaves, flowering time, panicle length, number of grains per panicle, grain weight per panicle and 1000 grain weight had a narrow range genetic variability, meanwhile the diameter of the stem base and yield per plot were wide genetic variabilities. The plant height, number of leaves, flowering time, panicle lenght, number of grains per panicle, grain weight per panicle and 1000 grain weight show heritability values which are’t heritable, meanwhile the diameter of the stem base and yield per plot have a heriatbility values which are heritable.
