dc.description.abstract | The future of the manufacturing industry lies in a new paradigm coined as Industry 4.0. This term is an umbrella for a variety of intertwined concepts. The terminology revolving around Industry 4.0 can be confusing and a disambiguation is proposed in this article. In a few words, Industry 4.0 is all about connecting people, services, machines and data through nine fundamental technologies. Explanations and examples of applications for the concept of Industry 4.0 and the corresponding technologies are given. The role of the university in preparing the workforce for the future of the industry is also discussed.
