Abstract

Identification of magnetic particles and the elemental composition of the natural sands of the Rokan River, Riau Province has been done. The natural sand samples that have been dried under the sun were separated between magnetic and non-magnetic particles using Iron Sand Separator (ISS). This result was called the product of ISS. The product of the ISS was milled using ball milling with iron balls having diameter of 1.5 cm for 30 hours and 100 hours. The results of this process were separated using Neodynium Iron Boron (NdFeB) magnets and this result is called ball milling product. The magnetic susceptibility was calculated based on the values of magnetic induction (Bo) of a solenoid of 2500 turns, 10 cm long and 3 cm in dimater and total magnetic induction of the solenoid (BT). The magnetic induction the solenoid was measured using Pasco Magnetic Probe PS….. ?? . The results show that the magnetic susceptibility increases from 1140.59 × 10-5 to 15495.71 × 10-5 for natural sand and ball milling product for 100 hours, respectively. The X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) test shows that the composition of the magnetic element Fe increases from 1.67% to 35.39% for natural sand and bal milling product of 100 hour, respectively. . The X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) test shows that the magnetic phase of 100 hours ball milling product has a hematite phase (α-Fe2O3) with some impurities such as silicon (Si) and Titanium (Ti)
