Abstract

Anesthesia and surgical procedure are stressors that trigger a stress response. Stress response can lead to the secretion of hormone cortisol that causes hyperglycemia. Hyperglicemia can delay the wound healing process so that this situation can lead to a longer hospitalization and the costs incurred by the patient was becoming increasingly. Aim of this study is to perceive the perioperative blood glucose level from elective surgical patients with general anesthesia. Descriptive cross sectional study was done, with 43 surgical patients with general anesthesia who meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results showed that 43 (100%) patients have normal pre anesthesia blood glucose concentration, 15 patients (34,9%) had an increase in blood glucose concentration during surgical procedure and 29 patients (67,4%) had an increase in blood glucose concentration post surgical procedure. From this research we can conclude that there was increasement of blood glucose value during surgery and after surgery ends.
