Abstract
Nosocomial Infection or Health Care Associated Infection (HCAI) is one of
the leading causes of death and morbidity in hospitals and the other health care
facilities. Washing hands is the way to reduces incidence of HCAI. However, the
compliance among health-care workers to practice hand washing is still quite low.
Alcohol-based handrub for hand antisepsis is the solution for this problem. Alcoholbased
handrub has the better antibacterial activity. Some companies have released
an alcohol-based handrub so there is much commercial handrub with a various
prices. To help countries and health-care facilities to achieve system change and
adopt alcohol-based handrubs, WHO has identified formulations for their local
preparation.
This is an analitic experimental study with pre test and post test design aimed
to determine the comparisanon antibacterial activity of World Health Organization
(WHO)-recommended handrub formulation with commercial handrub to 20 subjects.
Each subject wash their hand using WHO-recommended handrub formulation and
commercial handrub and then do the test of antibacterial activity and count the
bacterial colonies by Total Plate Count method.
The results of this study showed that significantly log 10 of bacterial colonies
in pre and post-handrubbing using WHO- recommended handrub formulation and
commercial handrub and not-significantly difference of log 10 decrease using WHOrecommended
handrub formulation and commercial handrub.
