Abstract
Mangrove forest in the coastal area of Kuala Indragiri is one source of the livelihood of
local people. The relation between communities and the existence of mangrove forests has
led to the perception of the communities as an effort to maintain and to conserve
mangrove forests. This research objective is to analyzed perceptions of coastal communities
to the conservation of mangrove forests as a carbon sink. The perception of coastal
communities to the conservation of mangrove forests in the coastal area of Kuala Indragiri
captured using a questionnaire. The questionnaire used is a questionnaire - type rating scale,
which is a question followed by columns that indicate the level - level refers to the Likert
scale . The results of the analysis of questionnaires distributed in 95 respondents were divided
in five observation stations showed perceptions of communities in coastal areas Kuala
Indragiri on the extent and development of mangrove forests , some 34.82 % of the
respondents strongly agreed and 59.78 % of the respondents agree that the vast mangrove
forests reduced continuously. Public perception of the mangrove forest area declared is
reduced, causing mangrove forest loss is due to land conversion impacts and damage
mangrove forest loss results in lower earnings. Mangrove rehabilitation efforts, respondents
declared failed .
