The respondents (samples size) of this study are 400 senior high students in Pekanbaru. Ten students from the samples are chosen for the interview purposes. Quantitative data was collected by using Strategy Inventory for language Learning (SILL) by Oxford (1989).Descriptive and inferential statistics are used to analyze the quantitative data. The research finding reveals that there a significant difference among students’ academic background in language learning strategies. The qualitative data gives additional information about the respondents’ strategies to learn English in general and individual skills of English. The implication of this study is that although students are aware of several language learning strategies, they may need to be explicitly taught to use them.en_US
