Abstract
Sengarat (Belodontichthys dinema) is one of the fish belongs to Siluridae family
which live in Tapung River, Riau Province. This fish is vurnerable according to
IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature). Therefore aquaculture is
needed for its preservation. This research aims to give information about the gut
content of Sengarat fish and categorized it as main food, supplement food and
additional food. Information about gut content becoming a necessary for food
composition in aquaculture and conservation of sengarat fish. Research about the gut
content of Sengarat fish in Tapung River, Riau Province has been conducted for 6
months, since November 2014 until April 2015. Index of Preponderance (IP) was
used to find out the biggest index of food in the gut of Sengarat fish. Result of the
examination on 66 fishes (38 male and 28 female fish) indicated that the animal
debric has the highest IP score (60,94%). Following the animal debric, litterfall, small
fish, fish scale, and insect have IP score respectively (38,04%), (0,70%), (0,26%),
(0,07%). Based on the Index of Preponderance (IP) score Sengarat fish consider as
the carnivore fish.
