Abstract

The purpose of this research is to improve the skills of writing a formal letter fifth grade students of SD Negeri 42 Pekanbaru with the application of the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL). Preliminary data obtained from classroom teachers, showed that skilled students before the implementation of the model Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) in study of 8 students who were less skilled totaling 28 people, with an average value of 53.61. Activity cycle 1 teachers first encounter with the percentage of 60%. Cycle 1 second meeting with a percentage of 75%. Later in the cycle II of the first meeting with a percentage of 80% for cycles II a second meeting with a percentage of 90%. Acceptance of the model of student activities Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) in cycle 1 the first meeting with a percentage of 50% for cycle 1 second meeting with the percentage of 65%. Later in the second cycle of the first meeting with a percentage of 75% for cycle II a second meeting with a percentage of 85%. Once applied the model Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) in learning, students’ skill of 16 students, while the less skilled students numbered 20 students, with the average value being 70.27. In cycle II increased significantly, evidenced by the results of the second cycle of the daily tests show that students are skilled totaling 33 students. While the less skilled students totaling 3 students with an average value that is 85.41. Based on these results it is concluded that the application of the model Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) can improve the skills of writing a formal letter for VB grade of SD Negeri 42 Pekanbaru with satisfactory results.
