Abstract

Eddy current is a specific phenomenon of electromagnetic induction. This phenomenon appears in a variety of technical problems and also in various situations daily life such as movement of ferromagnetic material in magnetic field. In this research, Eddy current phenomenon is generated in the aluminum plate with a size of 6 x 10 cm and extended with a 20 cm length of stick. The source of the magnetic field is generated by a pair of solenoid connected in series and parallel combination. The solenoid was designed in the form of beam with the width, high, and length of 4, 4, 10 cm respectively. In order to increase the magnetic field strength of the solenoids it is necessary to insert a ferromagnetic material such as a iron into the solenoid. Aluminium plate used was designed in four models that is with one strip, three strips four strips and no strips. The magnetic field strength is measured using Pasco PS-2162 Magnetic Probe in horizontal and vertical direction to the solenoid by varying the distance and magnitude of applied current. The results show that the highest value of magnetic field (40.1535 mT) was produced when the solenoid were connected in series connection with current of 7A. Eddy current arising in the plate is affected by the magnitude of the magnetic field strength and the numbers of strips in the plate. The larger the magnetic field strength, the smaller the number of oscillations. Moreover, the number of oscillations of the plate is decreased when the number of strips is increase. The decreased of this oscillation is due to the cut of eddy current by the strips. To compare the influence of a magnetic field strength on the oscillations of the plate, then Neodymium Iron Boron magnets was used as the source of the magnetic field and the result show that oscillation was significant decreased.
