Abstract
Research has been carried out on the analysis of magnetic susceptibility, composition,
and particle size of natural sand in the Rokan River, Riau Province by ball milling method. The
sample is dried in the sun before separating the magnetic and non-magnetic particles using an
Iron Sand Separator (ISS), the result of this ISS is called the ISS product. ISS products were
milled for 70 hours with variations in the speed of 100, 150, and 200 rpm using 16 pieces of 2
cm diameter iron balls. The result after milling is called ball milling product. The milled product
is then separated using a strong magnet Neodymium Iron Boron (NdFeb) for composition
identification using X- ray Fluorescence (XRF), and particle size analysis using a Scanning
Electron Microscope (SEM). The results of this study indicate that the magnetic susceptibility
with speed variations of 100, 150 and 200 rpm increased with an increasing rotational speed of
the Ball Milling tube, namely 32055.264 x 10−5, to 33618.935 x 10−5, and 33618.935 x
10−5. Identification of elemental composition using X- ray fluorescence (XRF) showed that the
percentage of Fe elements increased from 19.46% to 19.505% and 19.687%, while the Si
element decreased the percentage of composition from 51.406% to 51.048% and 50.151%.
Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) experienced a decrease in the average particle size, for
speeds of 100 rpm of 2.820 μm, 150 rpm of 2.241 μm, and 200 rpm of 1.765 μm.
