Abstract
The effect of particle sizes of activated carbon powder have been studied as an absorbent
materials for humidity control. Activated carbons used in this study were prepared from
coconut shell based materials. The coconut shell based carbons has been milled by using a
ball milling machine and sieved with a particles size less than 38 μm, 53 μm and 100 μm,
respectively. The various carbon with different particles size has been activated using 3 M
KOH. The humidity testing were conducted in a testing room that has been equipped with a
humidity gauge. The result showed humidity measurement for carbon with particles size of
100 μm generated the highest humidity of 87%, while for the carbon with particles size of 53
μm generating humidity of 85% and for size of 38 μm generating humidity 82%. SEM
micrograph data showed morphological properties, size and the pores of activated carbon. XRay
diffraction data showed the distance between the lattice ( dan ) , the width of the
lattice (La) and high of the lattice (Lc) for carbon 38 μm is smaller than the size of the carbon
100 μm
