Abstract

This research is about the magnetic properties and particle size of natural sand in the Rokan River, Riau Province. The natural sand samples were dried under the sun and separated from the rocks that followed the sand subsequently. Sand was separated among magnetic particles and non-magnetic particles by using an Iron Sand Separator (ISS). Coreless and core magnetic induction were measured using the Pasco PS-2162 Probe. Solenoid was made of 2500 coils with a 10 length and a 3 cm diameter. Coreless magnetic induction was measured as a function of currents 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 A with a 1 mm constant distance. The separated samples were decayed by using ball milling for 30, 60, 80 and 100 hours subsequently, then separated again using Neodymium Iron Boron (NdFeB) and the magnetic induction value was measured using Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM) and measured particles using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The results showed that the remanent magnetization value of the natural sand of the Rokan River which had been crushed by ball milling for 30 hours and 100 hours were 1,15 emu/g and 0,5 emu/g by the coercivity of 117,52 Oe and 227,34 Oe, and saturation magnetization of 1,3 emu/g and 0,6 emu/g. The results of the research for the natural sand particles of Rokan River that had been crushed for 30 hours and 100 hours were 231 nm and 96 nm.
