Abstract
The rapid development of the textile industry can increase the production of waste produced such as
dye wastes. Methylene blue is the most widely used dye in the industry and is harmful to live
organisms and the environment due to its resistance to degradation. This study aims to synthesize
and characterize ZnO nanoparticles photocatalyst using Annona muricata L. leaf extract as a
bioreductor that can degrade methylene blue and effects of contact time on degradation activity. The
synthesis process had mixed with Annona muricata L. leaf extract and the solution ZnO(NO3)2 0.05
M with a volume ratio of 1:5 and added with a few drops of NaOH solution 1M to pH of 12. The
biosynthesis process had carried out at a temperature of 80oC for 1 hour. Nanoparticles ZnO had
formed, characterized using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer result absorbance spectrum shows highest
absorption peaks that occur at wavelengths of 321 nm, is the ultraviolet spectrum area that is the
feature of ZnO. The degradation activity of methylene blue 5 ppm was calculated based on the
absorbance of the UV-Vis Spectrophotometry with an optimum time of 150 minutes resulted in the
degradation efficiency of 35.79%.
