Morphological And Cytological Characters In Solanum Melongena L. (solanaceae) And Its Taxonomic Value

Abstract

Solanummelongena L. is a member of Solanum that has variation in morphological character, such as fruit form and color. The taxonomic position of each taxa is still debatable. The objective of this study is to determine the status of four S. melongena L. members based on morphological and cytological characters. The fruit variation used are green and purple oval like snake fruit and green and purple oval fruit with bigger tip. Morphological data collect from some region in Central Java. Microscopic preparation made by using squash method. The observation result indicate that each member of S. melongena L. has morphological and cytological characters difference. Taxa with same fruit form have high similarity, support the division of S. melongena L. into two varietas. Var. serpentine for oval like snake fruit and var. esculenta for oval fruit with bigger tip. For each varietas is propose to be devided into two forma based on fruit color. The result indicate that morphological and cytological characters support each other in determine the status of S. melongena L. members.
