Abstract

Siak River is one of the rivers that has polluted water in Riau. Low water quality in this river is negatively affects the fish living there. To understand other effects of low quality water on fish, a study aims to understand the histological structure of organs of Kryptopterus limpok has been conducted. Fish organs (gill and kidney) were processed for histological studied (formalin fixed, alcohol series, HE stained, 6 sliced). The structure of the organs were compared with the organ of fish captured in the Kampar River that has good water quality. Results shown that in general, histological structure of gill and kidney structure of fish from both areas are different. The cell structure of the Siak’s fish shown abnormality, while those of the Kampar fish were normal. Cell abnormality such as hyperplasia, hypertrophy, necrosis, hemorrhage, epithelium lifting and fused lamella are present in the gill of Siak’s fish. Most of lamella fused and there was no space between lamellae. In the kidney of the Siak’s fish, there were damaged glomerulus cells, hemorrhage, kongesti and mineralization. Based on data obtained, it can be concluded that low quality of water in the Siak river causes abnormality in tissue structure of the fish.
