Abstract:
Medical students have higher risk of being stressful, especially first-year
medical students. This stress can come from academic and non academic problems.
Stress is influenced by several factors, one of which is emotional intelligence. Good
emotional intelligence can reduce the stress on a person. The purpose of study was to
determine the relation of emotional intelligence and stress levels in first-year students
in Medical Students of Riau University. This research used analityc method of cross
sectional study. The population was students at Faculty of Medicine University of
Riau batch 2012. Samples of this research were 109 students with total sampling
method. Researcher used a questionnaire based on the theory of Goleman’s
emotional intelligence and stress levels with MSSQ (Medical Students Stressor
Questionnaire). The relation of emotional intelligence and stress levels was analysed
using Spearman test. The result of the study showed a significant negative correlation
with the weak correlation between emotional intelligence and stress levels (r= -
0,213; p= 0,026). In conclution there was a relation between emotional intelligence
and stress levels in first-year students in Medical Students of Riau University.
