Abstract:
Diabetes mellitus is a disease caused by metabolic problem in which the level of blood glucose is above the normal level (hyperglycemia) due to insulin deficiency. The number of diabetes mellitus patient increase every year and the treatment cost is expensive, especially with clinic complication, therefore many people try traditional medicine as an alternative treatment. This study aimed to identify the toxicity level (LC50) of Gynura procumbens served to cure diabetes mellitus using Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT). Additionally, we aimed to determine the LC50 of Gynura procumbens extract treating to Artemia salina larvae. This study had been conducted from November 2014 to February 2015. In this research we used four extract concentrations i.e. control, 10 μg/ml, 100 μg/ml dan 1000 μg/ml. Four concentration of plant extract were applied to Artemia salina larvae with three replication. Total Artemia salina larvae died 24 hours after treatment were counted. The toxicity was analyzed using Probit analysis to determine LC50. The result indicated that the leaf extract of Gynura procumbens give lethal effect to Artemia salina larvae at concentration 239,88 μg/ml (LC50).
