Abstract:
Modification of natural clay using Keggin ion is one way to improve clay work.
Modification of clay is done by direct pillarization with Keggin ions (WK) and
graded using CH3COONa pillarization with Keggin ions (AK). Modified clay
was characterized by cation exchange capacity (CEC), surface area and acidity.
CEC clay was measured by spectrophotometry using Nessler reagent and obtained
an increase of 25.1 meq/lOOg CEC of natural clay, the surface area measured by
adsorption of methyl blue was decreased by 3.82 m^/g, while the acidity of the
clay was determined using titration method Bhoem with the principle acidyalkalymetry
and obtained the existence of acid sites on clay modification bigger
than natural clay namely 3.0 mmol/g.
