Abstract:
Sleep quality could effect health. The cumulative effect of prolonged sleep
deprivation and sleep disorders have been related with increased mortality and
increased risk for many chronic diseases including depression, hypertension,
stroke, and obesity. This analytical study with cross sectional approach purpose
to determined relationships between poor sleep quality with increased blood
pressure on 81 students of Medical Faculty of Riau University 2012 class.
Instruments of this study were Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire and
sphygmomanometer. The results showed sleep quality in poor category 84% and
good 16%. Systolic blood pressure showed pre hypertension 23.5% and
normotension 76.5%. Diastolic blood pressure showed pre hypertension 12.3%
and normotension 87.7%. The results of analytic test with chi square showed
that there was no relationships between poor sleep quality with increased systolic
blood pressure and there was relationships between poor sleep quality with
increased diastolic blood pressure.
