ABSTRACT
The problem of this research is to find out the ability of students in comprehending the use of
punctuation. The formulation of the problem is “How does the SD Negeri Kecamatan Tampan fourth
grade students’ ability in comprehending the punctuation?”. The objective of this research is to
describe the students’ ability in using the punctuation. The objects of this research were 321 fourth
grade students of SD Negeri Kecamatan Tampan. Simple random sampling is the technique used to
collect the data, with 1648 students of total sample. The data was collected by using performance
assessment and observation. Descriptive analysis was used to describe the quality of the students in SD
Negeri Kecamatan Tampan. The result revealed that the students’ average score in using punctuation
were 55.84 point or in the “good” category. From the seven indicators the writer explained; 1) full stop
with 55.01 point in “enough” category, 2) comma with 54.82 point in “mediocre” category, 3) colon
with 59.80 point with “enough” category, 4) dashes with 67.28 point in “enough” category, 5) question
mark with 62.14 point in “enough” category, 6) exclamation with 58.66 point in “enough” category,
and 7) apostrophe with 33.17 point in “mediocre” category.
