Abstract:
Methylene blue (MB) is one of the synthetic dyes which has toxic properties, MB is
also difficult it has an aromatic compound which is difficult to degrade by
microorganisms, so it can adverse effect to the environment and humans. The Fentonlike
method is a chemical method that can be used to degrade methylene blue (MB)
using a catalyst. This study aims to synthesize the MnO2/MgO composite using a onestep
precipitation method, the synthesis was carried out by reacting KMnO4, glucose
and MgO. The MnO2/MgO composite was characterized using X-Ray Diffraction
(XRD). The results of the XRD characterization showed that the type of MnO2 in the
MnO2/MgO composite was cryptomelane. Methylene blue degradation at a volume
concentration of 1 mL H2O2, 50 mg composite and 50 ppm methylene blue, was able
to degrade methylene blue by 55.037% in 120 minutes
