Abstract:
Peatlands in Riau Province have an area of about 4.9 million hectares and are able to store
as much as 845 liters of water in 1 m3 of peatland. The extent of peatland in Riau
Province causes most people to use peat water for their daily needs, while the color
intensity of peat water still does not meet the quality standards as clean water. One of the
efforts to get rid of the color of peat water is filtering using composite materials.
Composites are materials composed of a matrix and a filler. The composite material used
in this study consisted of SIR 20 natural rubber as a matrix and avocado seed activated
charcoal filler with a composition of 50% and 50% cast sand (KAP). The filtering of peat
water in Rimbo Panjang Village using the column method using KAP composites was
able to reduce the color intensity by 37.90%. The results of this filtering do not meet the
water quality standards based on PERMENKES RI No. 32 of 2017.
