Abstract:
Gelam (Melaleuca leucadendra Linn.) belongs to Myrtacea family potentially
producing both wood and non-wood products. However, gelam germ plasm is still
underutilized leading to be threatened by their extinction. Natural population of gelam
can be found in peat area in Kepulauan Meranti, Riau. Molecular genetic analysis of
gelam germ plasm may facilitate to genetic conservation and genetic improvement of
the population. DNA isolation is the most important step in the molecular-based
analysis. Therefore, we aimed to isolate genomic DNA using DNA extraction kit
(Genomic DNA Mini Kit (Plant) Geneaid). Result of the study showed that genomic
DNA successfully extracted from gelam young leaves. It indicates that DNA extraction
kit is powerful to provide DNA template for further analysis
