Abstract

Most people in urban areas use drilled wells as a source of water to meet their daily needs. This study aims to identify the value of magnetic susceptibility and heavy metal content in community drilled well water in Perumnas Rumbai, Rumbai Pesisir district. The Quincke method is used to determine the magnetic susceptibility value of a sample in the form of a liquid which consists of two stages, namely measuring magnetic induction using a Gauss Meter and changes in the increase in liquid level. The highest magnetic susceptibility value results from sample B which value of 4.14 x 10-4 with a drilled well depth of 25 m, while the lowest magnetic susceptibility value results from sample C which value that is 2.31 x 10-4 with a drilled well depth of 200 m. The relationship between the magnetic susceptibility value and the depth of the drilled wells in the sample is influenced by two factors, namely the household waste factor and the physical properties of the soil such as magnetic properties. Measurement of heavy metal content using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS), found that the elements of Iron (Fe) and Manganese (Mn) in sample B the highest value of 0.68 mg/L and 0.20 mg/L, respectively. The lowest value of Fe and Mn concentration in sample C is 0.33 mg/L and 0.11 mg/L, respevtively. The results of the above values indicate that the magnetic susceptibility value is directly proportional to the heavy metal content.
