Abstract

The process of biosynthesis and characterization of ZnO nanoparticles using ketapang leaf extract to degrade methylene blue has been successfully carried out. ZnO nanoparticles were formed through a synthesis process between a 0.05 M solution of Zn(NO3)2.6H2O with ketapangleaf extract. The synthesis was carried out by comparison between a solution of ketapang leaf extract and zinc nitrate solution, namely 1:5 or 7 ml and 35 ml and temperature 60o C, then dripped with 1 M NaOH solution until it reached pH 12. The results of the characterization of the UV-Vis Spectrophotometer showed that it had formed. ZnO nanoparticles with the highest absorbance intensity of 1,479 at a wavelength of 279 nm. The sample was then tested using X- Ray Diffraction characterization and it was found that the particle size ranged from 9.04 to 25.31 nm. SEM characterization showed the presence of micro-flower morphology with a size distribution of 392 - 423 nm. The TEM characterization showed a particle size distribution between 230 - 259 nm with an average particle diameter of 241.6 nm. The degradation activity of25 ppm methylene blue solution with variations in contact time of 60, 120, and 180 minutes resulted in the degradation efficiency of 12.7%, 26%, and 33%.
