Abstract:
Magnesium oxide is a base metal oxide which has catalytic activity in triglyceride
transesterification reaction, Michael's addition and Knoevenagel condensation.
Coprecipitation is a synthesis method of inorganic compounds with simple process and
produces the small and uniform particle sizes by high surface area. In this study,
magnesium oxide was synthesized by reacting MgCl2.6H2O and KOH various solvents
that are aquades, methanol, ethanol and butanol under reflux. The product was calcined
at 450 oC during 4 hours and characterized by TGA-DSC, FTIR, XRD, SAA and TPD.
Thermal analysis by TGA-DSC and FTIR, and x-ray diffractogram showed crystalline
MgO was formed at calcination temperature of 450 oC. Surface area analysis and
surface basicity analysis showed the MgO/ButOH has highest surface area of 156.4962
m2/g and highest surface basicity of 2.18 mmol/g.
