dc.description.abstract Obesity has been known well as one of primary factors triggering diabetes mellitus. Silent symptoms of hyperglycemia at the beginning make people do not aware of diabetes threatening their life. Recently, a lot of cases reported diabetes happened to early ages, particularly in one with obesity since his/her younger age. Furthermore, in some studies reported the number of metabolic syndrome in adolescent is high (8,1-17,4%). Prevalence of diabetes in Riau Province was reported 10,4% in adult, higher than national prevalence. Controlling this triggering factor should be done earlier. So that the purpose of this study was to detect possibility of undiagnosed diabetes mellitus in school-age children in Pekanbaru with obesity. A cross sectional study design was performed. About 213 (90 male and 123 female) students of state senior high schools in Pekanbaru were involved and randomly chosen. Nutritional status was measured by comparing index body mass with age, according to WHO. Students with very thin to normal nutritional status were categorized as normal, while students with pre-obesity and obesity status were categorized as obesity. Capillary random blood glucose was used to detect blood glucose level. Students involved in this study were 16,2±1,3 years old. The results showed 23,5% of students were detected as obesity. From those obesity student, 56% were female and 44% were male. There is no student detected as undiagnosed diabetes mellitus by using capillary random blood glucose test. The mean of blood glucose level was measured 108,43±21,79 g/dL. Furthermore, mean of blood glucose level in obesity group was a little bit higher than in normal group, 113,19 g/dL and 105,10 g/dL, respectively. Statistically analyzing using Mann-Whitney U test showed there was no significantly difference of blood glucose level between obesity and normal group en_US
