KEPENTINGAN AMERIKA SERIKAT (AS) BEKERJASAMA DENGAN RUSIA DALAM NEW STRATEGIC ARMS REDUCTION TREATY (NEW START) TAHUN 2010

Abstract

The purpose of this research is explain US interest cooperation in The New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty(NEW START) with Russia in 2010. US and Russia are the owner of the largest nuclear weapon in the world. With the expiration of START I, US would not have a verification regime again. START I which is expired in 2009, will be make US didn’t know about Russian Nuclear weapon development. But on April, 8 2010 US and Russia signed new treaty (NEW START) as a replacement of START I. This research applies qualitative research method. Data in this research is taken from books, journals, internet, media, and other references. This research uses nation state analysis, realism perspective, and strategy security theory. The result from this research founds that US interest in NEW START is to reduce the potential threat of using Russia's strategic nuclear weapons and for strengthened US national security. Through NEW START treaty will make US and Russia relationship tighten and stable, reduced strategic nuclear weapon, continued verification regime, increase the influence of US in strengthening the non-proliferation efforts, increase U.S. and Russia cooperation in various fields(For example, Russia supports efforts that led by US to impose UN Security Council sanctions against Iran and strengthen US-Russia joint efforts to protect nuclear material or nuclear weapons falling into the hands of terrorists), and allow U.S. to have the most effective weapon.
