dc.description.abstract A study on the Types and abundance of periphyton of water plant (Eichornia crassipes and Ipomoea aquatic) in the Rengas Lake was conducted from January – March 2013. This research aims to understand the types and abundance of periphyton in that area. There were three stations with 3 sampling points in each station. Samples were taken 3 times, once a week and they were analyzed in the Aquatic Productivity Laboratory of the Fisheries and Marine Science Faculty, Riau University. Result shown that the periphyton obtained were consist of 43 species that are attached in the stem of Eichornia crassipes and 41 species in the stem of Ipomoea aquatic , they were belonged to of 5 classes, namely Chlorophyceae, Bacillariophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Xanthophyceae and Chrysophyceae. The average of periphyton abundance was around 16,194 – 16,528 cells/cm2. The most common periphyton was Ulothrix zonata (3398 - 7232 cells/cm2, Chlorophyceae) and the lowest was Cosmarium taxichondrum (2 – 6 cells/cm2, Chlorophyceae). Diversity index (H') was 2.14 – 2.84, dominancy index (C) was 1.07 – 1.22 and equitabity index (E) was 0.59 – 0.80. General water quality parameters are as follow: temperature: 27 – 300C, brightness: 0.39– 0.89 m, pH: 6 – 7, DO: 2.09 – 5.47 mg/l, CO2: 7.98 – 10.98 mg/l, nitrate: 0.00 – 0.55 mg/l and phosphate 0.40 – 0.74 mg/l. Based on data obtained, it can be concluded that water quality in the Rengas Lake is good and able to support the life of periphyton. en_US
