Abstract:
The characteristic of children with down syndrome that is different with other normal children will cause bad stigma from the parent to children with down syndrome such as disgraceful illness, dangerous, unpleased, weak, unrecoverable, and something must be hidden. The aim study is to understand the stigma of parents that have children with down syndrome in extraordinary school in Pekanbaru. This study is descriptive study, samples taking with use the total sampling method in September 2012 in Pekanbaru. The stigma data from questionnaire of stigma. The result data that 63,73% of children with down syndrome are within 9-12 years old, 26,37% are within 13-16 years old, 5,50% are within 17-20 years old. Based on sex are 53% male and 47% female. Based on the level of income 75,83% >Rp.2.000.000, 21,98 % Rp.1.000.000–Rp.2.000.000 and 2,19% <Rp.1.000.000. Most of occupation history were businesman 62,63 %, employee 35,17% and farmer 2,20 %. The result of parents stigma data from 83 persons shows the quantity of males are 47 persons (57%) and females are 36 persons (43%) with low stigma is 91 %, middle stigma is 9%, and high (heavy) stigma is 0%
