Abstract:
Malaria is one of the most important transfusion associated infections in many parts of the world, particularly the developing countries where it is endemic, including Indonesia. Malaria transmission by transfusion can cause morbidity and mortality in recipient. Several malaria-endemic areas in Riau located near to Pekanbaru, thereby potentially occurs malaria transmitted-transfusions. This study aimed to identify malarial parasites in blood donors in Pekanbaru; a descriptive cross sectional facility based study was carried out. The research sample was 50 blood donors at Blood Bank of Arifin Achmad Regional General Hospital of Riau. A total number of 50 blood donors had been identified for the presence of malarial parasites by thick and thin blood smears using Giemsa’ staining technique. The results showed that the frequency of malaria incidence and frequency of malaria by species in donor blood at Blood Bank of Arifin Achmad Regional General Hospital of Riau is 0%.
