ABSTRACT
Extrapulmonary Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by the bacteria
Mycobacterium tuberculosis mostly attacks the organs out of the lungs. According to the WHO
in the year 2010 the number of cases of extra-pulmonary TB were 793,837 of all TB 6,155,391
cases. South East Asia region had a prevalence of extra-pulmonary TB cases highest compared
to the other regions. Five of the eleven members of the South Eeast Asia region is a country that
is included in the 22 countries with the highest burden of TB in the world. Indonesia ranks fourth
highest TB burden countries in the world. This was a retrospective descriptive study using the
total sampling method to know the description of extrapulmonary TB of patients who seek
treatment to Arifin Achmad General Hospital in Riau Province. Data from 71 samples were
taken from the medical record of extrapulmonary patients who seek treatment in Arifin Achmad
General Hospital in Riau Province on January 2011-December 2012. The results showed that
the extra-pulmonary TB patients who seek treatment to Arifin Achmad General Hospital in Riau
Province larger proportion is male (62%) and in the age group <14 years and 25-34 years
(23.9% respectively) . According to location of infections, it is more common at tuberculosis of
bones and joints (31%). Extra-pulmonary TB cases found as many as 52 (73.2%) cases and
extra-pulmonary tuberculosis with pulmonary tuberculosis discovered that as many as 19
(26.8%) cases. Extra-pulmonary TB cases with bacteriological examination or histopathology
was found as many as 25 (35.2%) cases and that was not done as many as 46 (64.8%) cases.
