Abstract:
Mechanical ventilator is a device that is used as a supportive therapy to help patients who are unable to maintain oxygenation or elimination of carbon dioxide adequately. Advances in medicine have increased the use of mechanical ventilator in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The aim of this study was to know data about the overview of mechanical ventilator use in the ICU Arifin Achmad General Hospital Pekanbaru. Type of research was descriptive retrospective. Samples were all cases with mechanical ventilator. Data of the cases such as identity (age and sex), underlying disease or surgery, duration of mechanical ventilator, ventilator mode, blood gas analysis before and after using the mechanical ventilator, tracheostomy, complication of mechanical ventilator and output cases with mechanical ventilator were collected from medical record of cases. Prevalence of mechanical ventilator use is 53.26% and ventilator modes were mostly at CMV (50.54%). Characteristics of cases receiving mechanical ventilator were mostly at age 15-64 years (78.57%) and male sex (51.02%). Most of the underlying diseases of cases receiving mechanical ventilator were not intrapulmonary cases but cases of surgical and neurology i.e. head injury (33.33%) and stroke (32.27%). Most cases were mechanical ventilator use in the short term because most cases of them followed by mortality. Mortality rate of cases with mechanical ventilator was 72 cases (77.42%). The use of mechanical ventilator in the short term reduces the rate of tracheostomy and mechanical ventilator complication. The result showed that most of cases receiving mechanical ventilator in the ICU Arifin Achmad General Hospital Pekanbaru were not intrapulmonary cases and most cases of them followed by mortality.
