Abstract
Oil palm frond biomass (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) which contains cellulose,
hemicellulose and lignin has been used as raw material for activated charcoal. In
this research, the characters of activated charcoal synthesized carbonized palm
fronds (COPF) its derivatives magnetic charcoal of oil palm frond (MCOPF)
which was prepared by coprecipication by iron salts were studied. MCOPF was
made to obtain an adsorbent that is able to separate quickly between the solid and
liquid phases. Some COPF characters were determined according to activated
charcoal No.06-3730-1995, including water content, ash content and iodine
adsorption capacity, while the values of these three parameters are compared with
MCOPF. At the same time, the COPF yield of 18.58% was obtained. COPF's
water content and iodine adsorption capacity have complied with SNI No.06-
3730-1995, but this is not the case the ash content. The moisture content and ash
content of MCOPF are higher than COPF, in contrast to the adsorption capacity of
MCOPF is lower than COPF. However, the rate of separation of the adsorbent
from the solution by MCOPF is faster than COPF.
