Abstract
Plectranthus ciliatus is one of the species belonging to the family Lamiaceae. Two
Plectranthus species, P. amboinicus and P. ecklonii have been reported to possess
inhibitory activity of the enzyme α-glucosidase. This study aimed to isolate secondary
metabolites and test α-glucosidase inhibition from n-hexane extract of P. ciliatus. This
species was extracted by maceration using methanol and partitioned with n-hexane,
followed by fractionation, purification and characterization. These extracts were dried
and tested in vitro with inhibition α-glucosidase. The results of the study obtained a
pure compound of white needle crystals with a melting point of 144-146°C (coded
PC-H-V5-FL17). The results of the characterization with the FTIR spectra and
phytochemical analysis of the PC-H-V5-FL17 were assumed to be a β-sitosterol. The
results with inhibition percentage values 31% for n-hexane extract, -13% for PC-H-V5-
FL17, and 97.8% for acarbose. Based from the data the extract and isolated compound
showing weak and inactive inhibition compared to positive control of acarbose.
