Abstract:
Shorea leprosula Miq. from Kalimantan is an important forest commodity that produce resin and based on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) is endangered species. Further development of this plant is not easy because of its irreguler fruiting season every year and recalcitrant type seeds. Recalsitrant seeds have a high water content so that it is not easily stored. This study aimed to test Shorea leprosula seed viability and vigor at various levels of water in the sawdust storage media. This research was conducted at the Biology garden, Departement of Biology, Faculty of Math and Natural Science, University of Riau. The method used randomized block design with four treatments of moisture content, i.e. (0%, 20%, 30%, 40%) that stored for two and four weeks. The seeds were germinated in a planting media from soil and sand (1:1). The seeds were grew and observed for 42 days. The parameters observed were the morphology of the seeds before and after stored in the media, as weel as the viability and the vigor of the seeds. The results showed that the seeds stored in sawdust storage media with moisture content of 40% for two and four weeks of storage reached 100% of germination. Seed vigor still could be maintained up to four week storage
