Abstract:
This classroom action research was conducted to overcome the students’ problems in listening
comprehension through the implementation of Listening Strategies Instruction. The subjects were the
second semester students taking Listening I. Before the treatment was conducted, a questionnaire to
obtain students’ listening strategies and a pre-test were administered, then a post-test was also held at
the end of the treatment. The steps of applying Listening Strategies Instruction are: 1) Orient class to
listening instruction,2) provide initial instruction in listening strategies, 3) model the listening process,
and 4) practice and class discussion. From one cycle with six meetings applied, there is a difference in
listening strategies used before and after the treatment. After the treatment, the listening strategies
applied by the participants are directive attention, selective attention, double-checked monitoring, auditory
monitoring strategy evaluation, and problem identification. Besides, there was an increase of the mean
score from the pre-test (56.64) to the mean score after the cycle (72.72) which was higher than the
standard competency (e” 70). In addition, the result of observation shows that students were actively
involved in the activities. The value of ‘t table at the levels of significance of 0.5 (2.06) and 0.1 (2.80) is
smaller than the ‘t’ observed value (6,69). This means that the use of Listening Strategy Instruction is
very effective to increase students’ ability in listening comprehension.
