Abstract:
Hybridization of Ompok rhadinurus (Or) and Pangasius hypopthalmus (Ph) and determination of their growth parameters and heterosis was carried out. Four crosses were performed (♀ x ♂) : Or x Or, Or x Ph, Ph x Or and Ph x Ph. Fourty days rearing of larvae in 15- liters aquaria from each of the four crosses were evaluated for growth, survival rate and heterosis.
The cross Or x Or had the highest final mean weight (3,38 g) and specific growth rate (13,28% day-1) compared to the other three crosses. A negative heterosis for growth (-68,28%) was observed in the hybrids while survival of the hybrids showed a positive heterosis (13,5%). Poor growth of hybrids accounted for the negative heterosis. Hence crossbreeds survived better than the pure breed catfishes.
